Kohl & Company performed all over the world with their comedy magic act. They were also a favorite among magicians and frequently “brought down the house” as the closing act at magic conventions. However, the story of Dick Kohlhafer (the Kohl of Kohl & Company) started decades before the success of his popular magic act. As it turns out, Kohlhafer’s brand of physical comedy started at a very early age, in a neighborhood bar on Christmas Eve. Stay tuned, all will be revealed in the book. Baltimore Magic and Novelty was a shop that sold magic tricks. It wasn't exclusively a magic shop, more of a general store that had a few counters of magic for sale. It went back at least to the 1930s and was in business until the early 1980s. Research is underway and the whole story will soon be told.
I have been plugging away at a biography about Al Wheatley for several years. Although he was not a Baltimore magician I became fascinated with his act Chop Chop and Charlene. Most magicians know he invented the One Cup and Ball trick (today known as the Chop Cup) but Wheatley was a successful club magician with an act that was very popular on the Nite Club circuit.
